a child, usually a baby or toddler. Com-monly used with mock distaste by par-ents, sometimes with real distaste by others, ankle-biter has been heard in all social classes in Britain and Australia since the late 1970s. Synonyms are leg-biter, rug rat and crumb-snatcher.
